SITUATION:
The Schwartz Athletic Center indoor swimming pool was being fitted for a new stainless steel gutter. When the old gutter was removed, the tile walls began to crumble and fall into the pool. ARDEX Sales Professional Matt Minney was called in by Wallover Architects to evaluate the damage and recommend ARDEX Tile & Stone Installation Systems products to bring the swimming pool back to working order. D. G. March & Associates was given one month to complete the project. In the meantime, Widener University swim team traveled to a temporary location for practice and swim meets.
CHALLENGES:
- Rehabilitation of existing pool in university
- Sports complex building
- One-month installation time frame
- 15,000 square-foot installation area
SOLUTION:
ARDEX Sales Professional Matt Minney demonstrated the capabilities of ARDEX products for installers at the jobsite on a weekly basis. ARDEX AM 100™ Rapid Set Pre-Tile Smoothing and Ramping Mortar was used to repair damage to the pool walls and prep the area for tile installation. ARDEX AM 100 ensured the pool complied with the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s specifications which require that certain pool lengths and widths and fall within a one-inch tolerance for competition. ARDEX 8+9™ Rapid Waterproofing and Crack Isolation Compound prevented topside water leakage on pool walls. Rapid-setting and drying qualities of these products expedited installation. ARDEX X 77™ MICROTEC® Fiber Reinforced Thin Set Mortar securely set pool tiles while ARDEX X 32™ MICROTEC® Fiber Reinforced Rapid Setting Thin-to-Thick Bed Mortar ramped and set pool deck tiles. ARDEX FL™ Rapid Set, Flexible, Sanded Grout (Natural Almond and Ocean Grey) and ARDEX CA 20 P™ Multi-Purpose Construction Adhesive and Sealant gave the pool and pool areas a polished and finished look. Because a full line of ARDEX tile products was used, a 10-Year SystemOne™ warranty was granted to D. G. March and Associates. Ted Wallover, owner of Wallover Architects stated, “I will only specify ARDEX Tile & Stone Installation Systems products for my pool installations from now on. ARDEX products are amazing.”

SITUATION:
The tile and grout installed at the Ritz Carlton was cracking with regular construction traffic, because the sound insulation system was moving. Tim Ellison, Regional Tile & Stone Specialist for ARDEX alerted the ARDEX Southern California Team that Jeffrey Nolen with Boyken International, Owners Representative for the Ritz Carlton, was concerned about the the performance of the Ecore QTrbm Sound Insulation System and ARDEX FB 9L™ setting material. A meeting was set for Ecore and ARDEX to review the installation.
John Inouye of ARDEX reviewed the areas that were compromised and determined the problem was being caused by an uneven concrete substrate. Jeff Mason, ARDEX Western Regional Manager suggested John visit the project with enough ARDEX TL 1000™ to perform a one room demo.
SOLUTION:
John Inouye visited the site with Doug Spenser of Quality Concrete, an ARDEX LevelMaster Elite Installer™ to assist with the ARDEX TL 1000 installation. Jeffrey Nolen was very impressed with the results, and inquired about an ARDEX warranty. ARDEX provided a 10 year warranty for the ARDEX TL1000 with the installation performed by Quality Concrete. Also extended to the Ritz Carlton, was an ARDEX Tile & Stone Installation 10 Year Extended Warranty for ARDEX FB 9L ShearFlex™ Thin Set used with ARDEX Flex Sanded™ Grouts and ARDEX Flex™ Caulk.
Nearly 3,500 bags of ARDEX TL 1000 Self-Leveling Underlayment were poured to ensure a smooth, flat, level surface to receive the sound insulation system and setting materials. The project was set with almost 3,100 bags of ARDEX FB 9L. More than 275 bags of ARDEX Flex Sanded Grout provided a smooth, beautiful finish with ARDEX Flex Caulk (color; Antique).
The tile installer had delayed the ordering of the ARDEX FB 9L and then wanted to switch the spec to substitute a Laticrete thin set which was available more immediately. Jeffrey Nolen would not allow the spec switch, citing swift customer service, strong warranties, and the quality and performance of ARDEX products.
In addition, Garvis Yearack, ARDEX Sales Professional worked with Mineger Contracting on the same project and obtained a contract for 135 units on the ground floor using 800 bags of ARDEX K-15™ Self-Leveling Underlayment. Strong customer service and technical expertise resulted in a successful installation with beautiful results.

SITUATION:
Capitol Floor Preparations an ARDEX LevelMaster® Elite Installer was brought into the Navy Medical Center at Bethesda, MD by RCI Construction to provide a solution and recommendation for the leveling of above grade flooring in the ARFFI Building #43. A new chemical lab (containing highly sensitive equipment) used for Anthrax testing would be installed. The floor had layers of potential bond breaking materials and due to the delicate equipment being used in the lab, the floors needed to be level. An epoxy finish was being placed over part of the concrete as a wear surface and VCT was being installed in the other areas.
CHALLENGES:
- 5,000 sq. ft. above grade
- Leveling issues
- Extensive substrate preparation
SOLUTION:
Capitol Floor Preparations walked the jobsite and recommended significant substrate preparation to remove the bond breaking layers. They recommended ARDEX K 500TM Self-Leveling Concrete Topping for the concrete wear surface and ARDEX V1200TM Self-Leveling Flooring Underlayment to receive the
VCT flooring.
The substrate was shot blasted and diamond grinders were also used to remove the layers to properly prepare the substrate to receive the ARDEX Topping and Underlayment.
Capitol used lasers and pins to mark the 2,000 sq. ft. area that would be the concrete wear surface to ensure the flooring would be perfectly level. They primed the area and then installed the ARDEX K 500. The finished surface was smooth, flat and level and was then sealed with the epoxy finish.
The ARDEX V 1200 was floated into the 3,000 sq. ft. area that was to receive the VCT. The installation went perfectly providing a smooth, flat and level surface for the new lab flooring.

SITUATION:
West Anaheim Medical Center needed to replace the VCT flooring in its busy Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Signature Interiors was awarded the project as the general contractor. After testing for moisture and getting higher than acceptable readings for a VCT installation, John French of Signature turned to Jeff Mason, ARDEX Regional Sales Manager for assistance on the project and for a recommendation on an installer for the ARDEX MC™ Moisture Control System, ARDEX K 15® Self leveling Underlayment Concrete and the VCT flooring. The very busy ICU needed a fast-track solution to minimize down time and loss of revenues. Revenue lost could be as high as $40,000 a day when the unit is not operational. Phase 1 needed to be completed in just four days.
CHALLENGES:
- 10,000 sq. ft. of floors with high moisture readings in the hospital ICU unit
- To be completed in two phases – Phase 1; 4,000 sq. ft. in only 4 days and Phase 2; 6,000 sq. ft.
- Each day the ICU is down equates to significant lost revenues. Project has a fast-track schedule to minimize down time.
SOLUTION:
Jeff Mason introduced John French of Signature to Jose Orozco of New Visions, a certified ARDEX MC Moisture Control System installer. New visions handled the entire ARDEX MC installation for both Phase 1 and 2. Wallach’s Commercial Flooring was brought in for the ARDEX K 15 and VCT Flooring installation. Wallach’s also used HENRY 430 ClearPro Clear VCT Adhesive to install the VCT flooring qualifying it as an ARDEX/HENRY SystemOne Installation . New Visions and Wallach’s completed the entire installation of Phase 1 in 4 days, on schedule and on-budget. The hospital was impressed with the beautiful floor and the fast-track performance of the ARDEX and HENRY products in the turn key installation. Phase 2 was also installed on-time and on budget. Because of the great success and performance of these installations, ARDEX products are being specified for other projects in the West Anaheim Medical Center.
